The nice thing about the Fall is that it is the season you can spend in the garden to prepare for Spring (by planting bulbs).
Fall is also the harvest time of the year. In the pumpkin patch, kids and adults alike go hunting for that perfect pumpkin to decorate for the Halloween parties.
Fall Means Garden Clean Up Time Has Arrived
The Fall season is one of renewal and renovation to plant new trees, and a variety of turf and grasses.
It is also the time to revise your garden by removing dead plants and shrubs, replace parts of the lawn that did not survive the summer weather. Be sure to inspect you shrubs and plants for disease. If the disease is serious you may have to remove the plant entirely.
Fall gardening chores also including raking those leaves that never seem to leave.
I guess you get the idea, the Fall is the time to do miscellaneous gardening chores to beautify your garden for the next spring. It is like a tune up on a car.
Great Fall Vegetables
Normally you will have to clear out the remnants of your summer garden by removing all stumps, weeds and rocks. Add new fertilizer to enrich your soil. Depending on the size of you garden site you should have the Fall Garden site ready within 2-3 hours.
Get your kids involved as this is a great family project on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Common Fall vegetables you may like to grow are: Onions, Cabbages, Radish, Spinach,
Turnips, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, and much more. Check with your local nursery person to find what Fall vegetables grow well in your neck of the woods.
Some of the Fall vegetables like the turnip, mustard, celery, carrot, kale and leek grow best when planted as seeds in the garden. These include: turnip, mustard, leek, celery, kohlrabi, carrot, and kale.
Fall’s Favorite Flowers
Some of the prettiest and most colorful Fall or Autumn flowers are the Mums and the Asters. They both come in a wide variety of sizes and colors.
Once planted the Asters will stay in your garden forever. They are called perennials, and are a favorite of many Fall gardens and landscapes.
The Chrysanthemum (commonly called the Mum) comes in all colors except the blues.
The Asters and the Mums like the sun and daylight. Their soil should drain well and use good fertilizer when planting them. By adding mulch or peat moss will keep their soil beds fertile and create a healthier growing environment for them.
Fall’s Flower Bulbs
You can get a pre start on your Fall bulb planting by using the common pony packs of Fall’s flowers found at your local nursery.
There are literally hundreds of flowers you can plant so check out your fall garden plan. Plant color, be creative and bold. Go for it.
The Allysum, Black-eyed Susan and Balloon Flowers (blues and pinks), and the Shasta daisies are especially colorful and make great Fall garden additions. With the pony pack concept of gardening it’s fun and easy.

Miscellaneous Fall Ideas
Remember that the Fall is also a great time to plan for your Spring garden by ordering your seeds now and have them ready for planting.
Cleanup your yard in the Fall. They say the best month to do this is October.
Get your rake ready and clean up the leaves, pull out dead shrubbery that you want to replace. Do a little weeding. Check your tools and supplies and see if they need cleaning, or repairing or if you need to add any new tools or equipment to your inventory.
