What Plant Hardiness Zone are you in?
The plant hardiness zones divide the United States and Canada into 11 areas based on a 10 degree Fahrenheit difference in the average annual minimum temperature.
PLANT HARDINESS ZONES - FIND OUT WHAT HARDINESS ZONE YOU ARE IN
Plants that survive freezing winters are called hardy, while those that succumb to cold weather are called tender. The plants in this book are rated according to the coldest temperatures they can survive.
Summer heat and humidity and lack of winter chilling in warmer climates may limit the ability of some plants to thrive. Because of this, and the fact that within each zone there are microclimates that can be colder or warmer, we suggest that you use the zones as a guide, but feel free to experiment with plants rated marginally hardy in your area.
Zones in North America are based on average minimum temperatures, with zone 11 rated warmest and zone 1 coldest. Each zone can grow plants from lower numbered zones. For example, if you live in zone 4, you can include plants from zones 3, 2, and 1 in your garden.

Plant Hardiness Zone. Take time to familiarize yourself with the climate conditions of your area.
Determine the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone for your region and garden. This map tells you the average first and last expected frost dates for your area as well as the 15-year average of the lowest temperatures it has experienced. While the information used to draw the map is current, there are other factors that influence the growing conditions in your yard. In addition to the general climate in your area, also consider the variation caused by the particular conditions—microclimates—in your garden.
